To add some sparks to this year Chinese New Year's celebration, we planned to play fireworks together. Scheduled on the 3rd, right after the girls exam but i wont be able to make it because i'm flying off the next day, hence tonight (Thanks so much!). Tonight shall be the last time we gather till the coming months. Tough road ahead nevertheless still sticking to the motto : Study smart, Play hard.

Finding the right thing

Mum came across an article few months back regarding protecting your eyesight. The concern grew since i've been and will be always walking under the sun during my course in Miri. That's when the idea of transition came in.

Nevertheless i had a hard time finding the right frame because the frames are mostly too big unless i go for frameless but it's fragile. Hence, i decided to go for shades, which too serve the same purpose and somewhat cheaper. I set my budget to be RM300 or less. I ran 4 optic shops in a day and couldnt find any shades to my liking or if i do, the price is god knows why so expensive, RM600 for a Ray Ban and RM800 for Giorgio Armani. Fine. I was very, very disappointed.

Guan Ho Leong (located at BDC) was my last hope. Walking in without much expectation, i found the right one within half hour; fits perfectly, great price, perfect.

I guess life is about finding the right thing and that the best gift comes when you least expect it.

So practically i've been out whole day despite having open house today ;p. We had CNY visiting starting with my place and Char's was the last stop. Bathed at Char's place, rush to Yen Haw's place for steamboat cause we were all very very hungry. Last on the list was movie - Valentines Day. Ohhh everyone is paired up tonight, very cute though. Dressed in casual Snoopy top and jeans with Crocs slippers, people were looking at Char & i as if we were lesbian i swear we're not. It was just for the fun of tonight, the atmosphere.

I guess Valentines day isn't much about couples and lovers. Neither it is about candlelight dinners and roses. It's about spreading the love. This year was even better than last year's celebration; more exciting, exhilarating and enjoyable. In fact, it's the best so far. I'm truly thankful to God that i've got a bunch of really great friends (words cant describe how great they're, really). Life's so much better with their presence.

Days ago, aunt introduced me to this eatery place called Little Cottage which has very nyonya setting. They served nyonya foods (nasi lemak etc) and western food as well. Love the place set up and the food, especially the steam Lady's Fingers served with belacan.

Brastagi is a lovely tourist town located at Karo Highland. It's like the only place you can look for souvenir in Medan. Did i mention how hard it was to purchase souvenir here? I barely see any keychains or magnets (you know, the usual souvenir)

Sipiso Waterfall is like a magical waterfall which flow out from a smalll ravine approximately 120 M down into Lake Toba. A nice place for picnic.

Gundaling Hill has beautiful garden and offers a clear view of two volcanoes. Also, here you can take a 10 minutes horse ride for 20000 rupiah (RM7.40).

Samosir Island

This is a continue post from the previous.

At Samosir Island, we stayed overnight at a Victorian look alike humble cottage - Carolino Cottage which cost 150,000 rupiah (RM55). With this rate, you cannot expect the facilities to be on par with a 5 star hotel. However, it offers a spectacular view of Lake Toba and is open up to Lake Toba where you can swim or do some fishing. In addition, it owns private garden.

I feel good, i feel happy, i feel on top of the world. My family likes the place. It gives us a feeling of serenity. It's so pure, so untouched. One wouldnt know this scenic place is located in Medan, Indonesia; one might think it's New Zealand.

I was so happy to taste Lake Toba's grilled fish that night and man it is a huge portion. Grilled fish was served with French salad sauce prepared by the guest chef. Also, we were served free wines as if we are special guests (VIP).

We met this little Indon-English kid who is so uber cute and friendly.

Lake Toba, also known as Danau Toba, is the largest volcanic lake in South East Asia. Surrounded by a breathtaking view of mountains, Lake Toba is indeed very awe-inspiring, with Samosir Island in the middle (also due to eruption). Sitting 900 meters above sea level, it has pleasantly cool climate and magnificent view.

The entire 6 hours journey was quite a hassle but worth it. We chartered a vehicle and it was a 5 hour drive from Medan to Parapat, the shore of Lake Toba. From Parapat, we took a 30 minutes boat ride to reach Samosir Island, the island within Lake Toba.

9 Facts about Medan

1. Airport

~Medan airport provides Shuttle service (reminds me of Hang Zhou, China)
~Short conveyor belt caught my attention
~Trolleys are not available at the arrival hall. You can see locals in blue uniform, offering to
push the trolley & serve you by helping visitors to fetch their luggages and calling the taxi.
With this, they hope to earn an income (tips).

2. J.W. Marriott Hotel
~It has 2 security checkpoints : (1) entry to the car park [with 7 to 12 security guards checking the car bonnet, boots etc etc] (2) lobby entrance
~You've to scan your belongings upon EVERY entry to the hotel.
~Very tough security. Shocking but impressive.

3. Parking
~In Malaysia, parking coupon is being used.
~In Medan, you've to pay TIPS (amount of TIPS subject to requirement from the locals). The parking fee is price as low as 1000 rupiah to 5000 rupiah. I find this rather annoying. NO LAW woi!

4. Transport ~ In Cambodia, trishaw is called Tut-tut.
~ In Thailand, it's Toot-toot.
~ In Indonesia, it's called Becah.
~ Becah can hold up to a maximum of 3 person. ~ Price : 5000 rupiah (RM1.90) per ride. ~ Ohhhh by the way, the VIOS there is called LIMO (sound cool aye!)

5. Traffic
~ People claimed that Kuchingnites driving is crazy (also dangerous) compared to Australians (I agree).
~ Worst in Medan! People there drive like law doesnt exist (or it doesnt at all?) ~ They overtake without giving signals, follow the cars so closely that they might as well kiss the front car (approximately 10cam between two cars). Bloody crazee!
~HONKS (the horror) : Medan drivers HONK LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW. I'm serious. At peak hours, there isnt a single second you wont hear the honk. They surely utilize the car's horn *insert sarcasm*

6. Food
~Reasonably priced Asian food is served.
~Food served are usually TOO SALTY; Drink served are usually TOO SWEET.
~Look up for their local specialties - Teh Botol (taste alike our Teh C Peng)
~Cheapest food you can get there is the local Mie Sapi - 1000 rupiah (RM0.37/37 cents)

7. Fruits
~Had the cheapest durian ever in my life - 6000 rupiah (RM2.20 only ohmygoodness and it tastes good!)
~Markisa (orange) : belongs to Passion fruit family
~Pepino (purple) : known as Tree Melon, taste like Cucumber & has medical purposes.
~Terung Belanda : Dutch Eggplant/ Tree Tomato

8. School
~ Girls : Unlike in Malaysia, schoolgirls in Medan wear 2 two pieces (very Japan!)
~ Boys : Caps are compulsory.

9. Shopping
~ Unless you want to purchase fabrics and clothes, Medan is definitely not the place for you to shop. In fact there's nth in Medan, even souvenirs are barely in sight.
~ The only attractive place in Medan is its famous Lake Toba, which is a 5 hour drive from Medan. Too bad, one cannot fly in Lake Toba. (Stay tuned for Lake Toba's photos)

10. Poverty rate ~ People in Medan is generally richer than Cambodians.

Merdeka Walk is like a Food Republic@Singapore. It offers a wide range of choices from Dim Sum to Chee Cheong Fun to Frozen Yougurt. Boy was i so happy when i found my all time favourite Yakun Toast in Sun Plaza@Medan, Indonesia. Nelayan Restaurant is very famous there : serves Asian Cuisine & Dim Sum.

Merdeka Walk is only 10-15 minutes walk from J.W. Marriott Hotel.

Colmar Tropicale@Bukit Tinggi

Colmar Tropicale is inspired by the original Colmar Village in Alsace, France. Walk into Colmar Square and get a feel of French themed buildings.
A day trip wont be enough to cover everything if you want to explore this place as it offers a variety of activities from paintball to golf to horse riding to Japanese Spa, so you might consider staying overnight at the resort there.

Japanese Tea House@Bukit Tinggi

Also situated high up on Bukit Tinggi, Japanese Village is a must visit. The tranquility of this traditional zen garden is a good get away from the bustling city.

As you set food into the village, you could see a Japanese Tea House located within an exquisite landscape - a garden with mini waterfalls and koi pond surrounded by bamboos shoots. One can also indulge in the Japanese Spa called the Tatami Spa, experience an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony (RM18) or try on the colourful Kimono (RM20).

I prefer Japanese Village than the Botanical Garden because here, i dont get stung by those nasty merciless mosquitoes.

So much of a KL shopping spree

Have you ever had all the cash ready in your purse, wanting to spend on sth yet you couldnt do so because you just couldnt find the right thing? I did :(

Day three in KL and i'm still holding on to shopping and hunting for good bargains : nice clothes, vintage accessories, and gorgeous heels. KL is supposed to be shopping heaven. Yes, it's supposed to be a place where ideally, people go shop till you drop. (whoopsy)

To my disappointment, i couldn't find any nice heels within my budget, clothes soothing to my eyesight and worst i missed the biggest pasar malam in Cheras by one day. To boot, i missed the Flea Market in The Curve by going there on a Friday. Fyi, Flea Market is only available on the weekends. So much of a shopping spree?

So these are what i got. SEED top, Walt Disney Mickey Mouse top (dont laugh, i LIKE mickey alright), Cotton On basic tank dress, Jimmychoo handbag (immitation), Ipanema sandals (like finally), Vincci heels & Ylang Ylang bracelet. It would be a perfect set if i had just go for that Dorothy Perkins skinny.oh wells.

finally i've got a B&W bracelet to go with my green dress :)

On a brighter side, sis in law gave me two pairs of shoes from Hong Kong =D and a belt match my new bought dress :) Thank you so much. Now that makes me a happy girl.

I came across it in the newspaper : consume solely apples for 3 days, you'll lose weight. There and then, i thought that was about it and couldn't be bothered. The next day, my friends and i talked about it and i've got this sudden urge to try it because i realized i've been living 24 hours without rice.

I was doing well for the past two days. NO rice, NO cakes, NO chips, NO fries; nothing except for chicken, vegetables, soup and apples :) but....

Sigh.

I knew it i knew it. it lasted for 2 good days.how did i, did it? :s

Out and about. The 7th day in Kuching, JOshua is still liking & eating Kolo Mee. Pay back time aye? Being very helpful, Sam and i helped him ~~with his pay back time~~ put on weight. (Kolo Mee is damn fattening can) Hence, breakfast at Yong Guang 9am sharp. Sorry both, was late :(

Coming back as an Australian tourist (justkidding;p), we brought him on an adventurous trip ie, to experience local sampan & visit Fort Margherita. ~~ooOh wait, i forgot Samantha Sim is not local, she's from Sabah!~~

Another friend, leaving for the States. Heck she's gonna transit to 4 places before reaching the destination within the next 48 hours. That's very, very tiring.

I've always like going to the airport, when you're going for a vacation, it always gets me excited and i couldnt sleep well the night before departure :) But when it comes to sending people or rather more saddening cases - friends (stroke relatives stroke boyfriend) off, it's sad. At least i think it's sad, who likes to say goodbye, right? God knows when is the next time you gonna meet each other. (Thank God i'm studying this close to Kuching)

You see, i hate growing up, at times. After you graduate from high school, everyone goes on different path and this keeps me wondering. Ahh well, this should be a tribute not my rants. A bad start

...and so i've got a Mum who is very persuasive indeed and i went for a hair cut. (Don't worry Mum i still LOVE YOU!). Five or Six inches of my long long silky black black pretty hair - GONE!
You know...like a bubble goes poof, vanished into thin air. Aww, so sad. I'm sad and heart broken (sort of) at the fact that my hair is damn fugly now and not to mention damn uber short. In short, my WORST hair cut ever!

I looked back at 2009 and exclaimed "whoa, 2009 has been such a wonderful year for me!". Barbeque for the third time within the past 96 hours marks the beginning of a New Year. A new beginning, a new journey waiting for us to embrace. This new year isn't about what happened, it's about what is to come. I shall embark on a voyage of self discovery. I was actually planning to laze around at home on Christmas night and prepare myself dinner (i did anyway) and then watch some movies even though there is a family dinner tonight.

Then Tze Hui & Kim Chiew insisted (well, sort of but with good intention here) that we join Christmas dinner. Am glad we did! It was one fabulous night. How could i ever thank these especially sincere people Char, Tze Hui, Kim Chiew, Jimmy & Wui Cherng (I'm not saying the others are not sincere). Thanks for fetching us, driving around and also got lost in the ulu ulu place (sorry).

The best thing comes when you least expect them. Unplanned thing works better off after all :)

Since there wasn't any gathering this year, I thought Christmas countdown will be like any other ordinary quiet night. I promised to be Sam's date for the night and so initially it was just the two of us. Coincidentally, we met Kel, Jen & Van at the spring. Then Tian's working until 11.30pm. Now i see perfection! Tada it turned out to be a combined group Christmas countdown at the spring.

We were lucky to find a corner to squeeze in 5 people in Starbucks just to wait for countdown and shared a 15 bucks Frappuchino. Towards the end there were endless fireworks explosion and heck we screamed like crazy that i think my voice box gonna get torn.

Talk about shoes, heels to be precise. I'm so deprived of nice heels. Old one is running out, speaking of which i've threw one into the bin, two soon. So yeah, i feel sad for my shoe cabinet. HAHA! Somemore, i didn't manage to get a nice pair of heels in SG. Meanwhile, Char & Bea were desperate for heels. So today we went shoe hunting, Dor tagged along to shop.

So i've got a long list of to-do-list and one of them is to set up the Christmas tree and wrap Christmas gifts. Being a good girl, i woke up super early around 8am this morning to set up my Christmas tree. Unbeknown to be, Sharon drove up to my doorstep with Agnes. And so the girls helped with the Christmas tree. Thanks lovelys!

Shifted the Christmas tree to the floor instead of the usual putting it up on the tv set cabinet, hence it looks so much smaller, or rather SHORTER like ME. On a side note, i'm still taller than my Christmas tree lol. Also, i realize a small Christmas tree is enough for me to handle because you see i'm the only one setting it up. I dont have lil bro or sis to play around with me and set it up so yeah let's just forget about getting a bigger Christmas tree.

Had lunch with Tian Tian at Spring newly opened cafe or restaurant was it (whatever) called Gasoline. Gasoline has a weird Chinese name (jia you zhan) whoops. Nice place, not bad for change, the japanese tatami style :) and heck we had three times of a 10 snapshots with just one click and the people working there were laughing at us (not sarcasm but rather the joy). I was telling Agnes : I guess we bring happiness to others as well huh?

Today, i had the best (aside from the one in ShangHai) Xiao Long Pao in Bosses restaurant, Vivo City! Whoopsy, they do not allow customers to take photos of their foods. Nevertheless...i sneaked out my camera and yada yada :]

There are a lot of foods that i adore in SG and one of them is this ice cream with waffle. Now, dont get me wrong, i adore KCH's foods as well :) I will hunt for the road side ice cream stall each time i visit SG. It's a must. and heck i had 3 ice creams in a day. Every SG trip must be accompanied by a bowl of Ah Baling's tang yuan at Chinatown hawker stall. Must be wondering what's so special about it. Ahh well nothing much, the tang yuan there just taste especially nice, the best i would say =D Anyone who visit SG must stop by there, tang yuan with peanut soup rmb! This year they offer new variety : green tea & yam. I still prefer peanut and sesame though :)

Oh btw, Chinatown's items on sale are mostly from Cambodia and Thailand. So yeah, no point buying here cause it's expensive! See makes me wana fly to Phuket.

They've got Old Market, Central Market & Night Market. All selling somewhat almost the same items but Old Market is better for good bargains. Now you see, old is GOOD =p
